Heineken in Africa: In Conversation with Olivier Van Beemen

Date: Thursday 28th Feb 2019, 18:30 – 20:30

Venue: Djam Lecture Theatre, SOAS, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, London WC1H 0XG

For Heineken, ‘rising Africa’ is already a reality: the profits it extracts there are almost 50 per cent above the global average, and beer costs more in some African countries than it does in Europe. Heineken claims its presence boosts economic development on the continent. But is this true? From tax avoidance to links to human rights abuses, what are Western multi-nationals really up to in Africa and how might we go about researching it? Olivier Van Beeman, Dutch investigative journalist and author of the controversial book Heineken in Africa will attempt to answer these questions.

Join us for the book launch and a discussion with the author and guest speakers, hosted by the Royal African Society.

Copies of Heineken in Africa: A Multinational Unleashed by Olivier Van Beeman will be on sale at the event.
