Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria heads toward keenly anticipated elections on the 16th February 2019 to elect the president and the national assembly. Incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari is running for his second term on an APC ticket against Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on the PDP ticket. Nigerians go into this election grappling with the following; social and economic inequalities, ethnic and religious divisions, and structural weaknesses, such as corruption and weak state capacity. Despite emerging from economic recession and recording a growth of just 1.8 %, Nigerians feel the effect of slow growth and are desperate for growth that translates to better living conditions. Both Candidates have unveiled ambitious blueprints aimed at addressing these challenges but will these hold post elections?
Although the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was applauded for credible elections in 2015, there are concerns from some quarters that the commission’s progress may not be sustained in 2019.
Presented by the Royal African Society and GBS Africa, this international pre-election briefing only two days before the election will look at the various political dynamics and their impact on the elections. We will also discuss some of the factors that may impact politics and economic activity in Nigeria post-election, providing international journalists, UK Corporates, Civil society and developmental organisations with important content on Nigeria.
