Date & Time: 19 March 2022, 16:00 – 17:30 GMTvia Zoom

On 19th March 2022, Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan was sworn in, succeeding John Pombe Magufuli, following his tragic death in office. Exactly a year later, the Britain Tanzania Society (BTS) convened a high-level event to reflect on that first year in office, for a first ever-female President of Tanzania.

The recording is here.

The event was put together in collaboration with the Royal African Society and Friends of Tanzania. Beginning with a keynote address from the Minister of Foreign Affairs Liberata Mulamula, a high-level panel discussion took place including Speakers will include the Hon Zakia Meghji MP, who was the first female Minister of Finance, Ruth Meena, a gender and development expert, Dr. Frannie Léautier, CEO of SouthBridge Investments, author Aikande Kwayu and blogger Elsie Eyakuze.

In this event we were able to hear from a range of senior Tanzanian women on the impact for Tanzania of President Hassan’s first year in office, and what it means for women.
