Morocco Earthquake
Posted on 8th September, 2023 in News

The Council and staff of the Royal African Society were deeply saddened to hear
about the devastating earthquake and aftershocks that struck Morocco on Friday
8 September 2023. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the nation and to the
many thousands directly affected. إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون
Natural disasters have both severe immediate and longterm impacts and the
Royal African Society stands in solidarity with the leadership and people of
Morocco, and with the Moroccan community in the UK, as rescue and recovery
efforts continue.
We have been asked how can our our members and readers help? His Majesty
Mohammed VI, King of Morocco has opened a dedicated bank account for
voluntary solidarity contributions from private and public institutions, and we are
also using this platform to share details of some of the main humanitarian
organisations that have already launched emergency appeals to support their
relief efforts in Morocco:
Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF)
British Red Cross
Islamic Relief
Oxfam
Human Appeal
Care International
ActionAid
With such extensive loss of life and livelihoods, as well as damage to
infrastructure and cultural heritage sites, like the 12th century Tinmel Mosque in
the High Atlas, the consequences will be longlasting. We will continue to follow
and tell the stories of the recovery efforts, and the courage and resilience of the
survivors as they rebuild, through our website African Arguments.
